Poker: No Limit, Pot Limit and Fixed Limit
One of the most basic things in any poker game, whether it is holdem,
omaha or stud, is what kind of betting limits are used. Many new players
don't pay a lot of attention to the betting limits but will just look at
the table and say "$0.25/0.50," that's the lowest table they have and
they start playing there. The problem is, many times the lowest table is
no limit. Now every hand they play, someone can go all in and pretty
soon it can be the most expensive table to play at.
No Limit
No limit betting is just like it sounds, there is no
limit on the amount of money you or anyone else at the table can bet.
However, there are usually limits on the amount of money you can take
into the game. For instance, at a $0.25/0.50 game you might be able to
bring in a minimum of $25 and a maximum of $100. So although it is no
limit, someone can't bring in a million dollars and just keep going all
in until he beats everyone. New players usually get confused about what
happens when someone bets more money than they have. In this case you
have the option of putting all your money in. Now if you win the pot you
win the same amount of money from him as you bet. For example, if he
bets $100 and you only have $25, you can go all in and then $75 is
returned to him and you are both in for $25.
Pot Limit
Pot limit betting is probably the least popular but
it is still played a fair amount on some sites and it offers some
benefits compared to no limit and fixed limit betting. In pot limit
poker, you can bet as much money as there is in the pot. This means that
on the opening round of betting, you can't bet a huge amount of money.
However, if there has already been a fair amount of wagering, the bets
can get very large at the end. In many ways it is like fixed betting at
the start and no limit at the end. This can be good if you want to bet
but you don't want to go all in before you see all of your cards.
Fixed Limit
Fixed limit betting is the most popular at the real
money tables. Every round has a fixed amount that you can raise. You
will not win nearly as much at it when you win, but, you also won't lose
as much when you don't. Additionally, if you get tired of the bluffing
in no limit and pot limit games, it is great. Because it now becomes not
just affordable but profitable, to call someone who you think might be
bluffing.
Which One's For You
It depends how you like to play. I play all three,
but mainly fixed limit at the real money tables. This is because, I
don't like the wild swings my bottom line can take in the other 2. I
also get tired of the bluffing at times and just want to play the game.
However, fixed limit poker is much more subdued, tamer. You must play a
very controlled game to win and you really have to know the game to be
good at it. In no limit, the action can be great and when you get on a
roll you can really rack up the money. It is much more about being able
to tell when someone is bluffing and figuring out what they are bidding
with then about mathematics. Pot limit, is in the middle. You can nearly
win as much money as in no limit but you can also get into more hands
cheaply and it's a little harder to bluff at the start. Which game is
for you depends on your style of play and whether you are better at
figuring the odds at fixed limit games or whether you like the ups and
downs and bluff wars of no limit and pot limit poker. Just make sure you
know what you're in for the next time you sit down at the $0.25/0.50 no
limit table.
