Ralph Reed a Friend to Online Casinos?
Before you lash out against every conservative Christian for their
stance on putting an end to gambling, you might want to ask them what
their views are. Not all conservative Christian's feel the same
way about gambling - just ask former Christian Coalition leader, Ralph
Reed, who helped lawmakers behind the scene beat out a bill that would
have made online gambling adamantly illegal.
The bill, which would have cleared up any legal grey areas regarding
online casinos and internet betting in the US, was being considered by
Congress almost five years ago. However, with the help of Reed and
others, who were hired by an unbeknownst online gambling firm, the bill
was beat.
What makes the situation even more hairy for Reed is that he was
indirectly working for eLottery Inc. - the same company that hired
Washington lobbyist, and newly decorated criminal, Jack Abramoff.
However, a spokesperson for Reed said he knew nothing of this
affiliation, and that the only reason he worked to defeat the bill was
because it did not put an end to all forms of online betting. (although
selling lottery tickets online, which is what eLottery is lobbying to
do, would be one of the exclusions). Other forms of internet
betting, like horeseracing and slot machines would have their own
provisions under the bill, which many feared would have given minors and
problem gamblers greater access to online casinos.
Despite his case, many conservative Christians do not look as
favorably on Reed as they once did. Some say that his affiliation
with eLottery Inc. washes away all his credibility as a spokesman for
Christian morality and family values, which the Colation says must not
be degraded by gambling, especially the type of gambling found at online
casinos. Perhaps the notion of forgiveness is goes against the
coalition as well.
