The Humble Rise of Internet Gambling
Programmers
You may have heard the news already that the
multi-billion dollar company and most successful poker room on the internet,
Party Gaming, has flotated on the London Stock Exchange - the biggest in over
five years. However, you may not have heard just how this monolith company
got its start in the early days of online gambling.
Party Gaming, which was started by the adult
entertainer, Ruth Parasol, largely owes its existence to the people behind the
scene, which in this case and many others, are techie wiz-kids from India.
Anurag Dikshit and Vikrant Bhargava were the first two hired by Mrs. Parasol to
develop gaming software, which was only a speculative investment at the time.
The two had just graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology and had moved
to the U.S. to capitalize on the dot com movement. Mr. Dikshit had the
knowledge to develop the software, while Mr. Vikrant was taken on the market the
newly formed company. The rest is history.
These days, many of the people behind the scenes
at some of the world's most successful internet betting sites - online casinos
included - are Indian computer programmers, website designers and just about
anything else technically related. Outsourcing is becoming even more
common, with Indian web designers being hired at very cheap wages to create
hordes of gambling websites, complete with content and all. The final
product is very good to say the least (in most cases), and is making some people
in the online gambling business very rich.
Of course, this is frowned upon by the U.S.
government, so most American investors in the industry must either be offshore
or living on a very fine wire. As for the graduates of the Indian
Institute of Technology, there is nothing to worry about. Highly skilled
computer programmers are just as valuable as they were, if not more.
