Bingo Machines in Cayuga Portrayed as a
Nuisance
The Cayuga Nation, a federally recognized Indian tribe, is known for
their gas stations and convenience stores which also double as bingo
machine parlors. Located in the New York area, the Cayuga Nation
is in a battle right now with the Seneca County Board of Supervisors,
who have proposed a law that would deem these bingo parlors and other
gambling machines as nuisances to the public, and consequently bar them
from operating anymore.
There will be a public hearing held in the month of September to further
discuss the proposed law, which the Cayuga Nation plans to dispute.
According to the tribes lawyers, representatives of the Cayuga Nation will be in
attendance at this public hearing, in which they will proclaim their right to
operate the gambling gas stations, as well as make clear the matter is a federal
issue and not a county or state matter.
As of yet, the Cayuga Nation land has not been placed into a federal trust,
thus designating it a sovereign zone free of state regulation and taxes.
An application to do so is pending approval, which would promptly put an end to
the proposed law by Cayuga County to terminate the bingo machines in tribe-owned
gas stations. As for the current situation, lawyers for the Cayuga Nation
claim the tribe has opened up to county officials and has tried to reach an
advantageous agreement for both parties, especially with the Law Enforcement
Department. However, despite these attempts at compromise, the County has
done nothing to meet the tribe halfway, and instead continues the fight to end
gambling in public businesses.
