Search Engines Advertising for
Gambling Sites in Australia
Search engines in Australia are under fire after what appears to be
their disobeying of laws governing gambling on the internet.
Investigations are currently underway, looking into allegations that
several major Australian search engines, including Google Australia and
Web Wombat, have been illegally advertising for online casinos and other
online gambling websites.
The Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts
is looking into the matter, and stated that a full investigation was
underway. In regards to online advertising for gaming sites, the
practice is illegal as spelled out by Australian law. However,
what many suspect is happening is that search engines like Google will
display online gambling advertising links when users misspell gambling
keywords. For instance, there will be no advertising links to come
up when an online surfer types in "online casinos" (one of the biggest
internet gambling keywords there is). However, when a user
inadvertently types in "online casions" (which many people surprisingly
do) several online gambling advertisements show up.
Whether this is a loophole that cannot call for prosecution remains
to be seen. If it does pass that these search engines were
knowingly and blatantly breaking the law, they can be fined over $1
million each day. If individuals are found to be responsible (like
self-promoting hackers), they can be fined up to $220,000 for each day
documented of breaking the internet regulations. For some time,
the same practice was suspected of happening in the U.S., where online
advertising for online casino sites could result in very stiff
governmental penalties.
