Harrah's Casino Not Pleased With Gaming Floor Smoking
Proposal
In St. Louis County, where Harrah's Entertainment has in operation a large
casino, a smoking ban is being proposed, which has a very good chance of being
passed. Currently, Harrah's has their entire casino gaming floor and
restaurant a designated smoking section, which the proposed amendment aims to
change by cutting in half the designated smoking area.
In the proposal, half of the casino gaming floor would be designated
smoke-free. In the other half where smoking is tolerated, food will not be
permitted, thereby forcing players to the restaurant, where there is a
smoke-free zone as well. According to Harrah's management, the proposal is
unfair, and would be better off if the entire casino floor was made smoke-free,
and gamblers were permitted to smoke in the restaurant.
Harrah's had been silent for some time regarding the proposal in its making.
But now that it has been officially announced, they are voicing their concern.
Not only are they saying it is nonsensical, they are also predicting it will
guarantee a loss in patrons. Two spokesperson's for Harrah's individually
stated the proposal would mean a loss of tax dollars for the state, and layoffs
of casino personnel due to gamblers moving over county lines to play at
neighboring casinos.
Illinois sure wouldn't mind if such a series of events unfolded, for they
have been trying to jump-start their gambling industry for some time now.
Whether or not the neighboring counties decide to work on this together will
give the final verdict regarding Harrah's status.
