Casinos Proposal for Bethlehem, New Jersey Attracting
Opposition
Atlantic City has always been the hub of gambling in New Jersey.
However, it did not get that way without an uphill battle and obstacles
to overcome. Bethlehem, New Jersey should take that into
consideration now that the small city is trying open its own casino.
As soon as it was publicly announced that industrial property in
Bethlehem's steel district was being considered as a future site for a
large casino, opponents began speaking out, culminating in a proposed
law that would ban gambling from the steel district.
The city's Planning Commission, however, resolved to direct the City
Council to reject the law. It should be interesting to see how the
Council reacts to the recommendation considering that both of the law's
authors sit on the council. However, the saving grace for the
proposed casino could be that in order for the law to take effect,
Bethlehem's mayor, John callahan, would have to approve it. The
mayor is an open supporter of slots and gambling, which according to the
casino proposal, would help jumpstart the steel industry in the region.
To back and support their recommendation, the Planning Commission has
urged Bethlehem's city administration to hire a consultant to develop a
study that would examine all the effects that a slots casino would have
on the city, considering such factors as land and economic impact.
