Buffalo Casino Receives Doubts From City
Council
In Buffalo, New York, plans to build a casino may not manifest if
nothing more is done to prove how the construction of a casino in
downtown Buffalo will benefit the city's economy. The Seneca
Nation is ready and more than willing to put up the proposed casino,
which the tribe feels will create long-term jobs and bring more money
into the economy. There are some skeptics however, who feel that
the casino will only create construction jobs in the very beginning, and
will only end up costing the economy more in the long run.
City Council members recently started debating the issue again after
starting back up from their summer break. It seems the main
concerns coming from the council are that a downtown casino would not
generate the revenue as some say it will. Buffalo is no Las Vegas,
and many feel that the introduction of a casino would not draw the
attention it would need to bolster the economy. Some local
business tycoons also voiced their concerns that a casino would actually
have a negative impact on the city of Buffalo.
Other concerns include a fear that the Seneca Nation would seek to
buy further downtown property to expand its casino - as so many gambling
companies based in Las Vegas do to this day. And as far as the
local economy goes, smaller businesses have been an increasing object of
debate. The concern for them is that they would suffer the most
from a casino that would draw business away, and slowly deplete the
buying power from local consumers. Whatever the Council decides in
Buffalo, one thing is clear - the debate on whether to allow a downtown
casino to go up is not a philosophical one. It is a monetary one.
