Las Vegas Slogan Still Helps Casinos Despite
Legalities
"What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas" is starting to become a
slogan remembered more for its history, rather than the phrase itself.
The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) was responsible
for creating the slogan in an attempt to bring in more players to its
best casinos, which the Board then legally sold to R&R Partners for $1.
The sale was carried through so that R&R could use the slogan for an
advertising campaign they were hired to do by the LVCVA. However,
it turns out a woman by the name of Dorothy Tovar is using the slogan on
retail products in nearby California.
Now, this $1 trademark has turned into legal fees of over $100,000
for the LVCVA. Las Vegas mayor, Oscar Goodman, (who once was a
high-profile lawyer and a current member of the LVCVA Board)
lightheartedly joked that the legal fees were more than he himself
charged in much more serious cases. The law firm handling the case
is Morrison & Foerster, who is based in California, and has experience
in trademark infringement cases. For an entire month, lawyers have
been helping the LVCVA sort through the paperwork that shows the legal
sale of the $1 trademark - And all this for a small fee of over
$100,000.
Members of the LVCVA Board have been cleared of any wrongdoing
however, thus far putting everybody in at least a joking mood. As
for the marketing campaign contracted to R&R, it has been three years
since the company legally bought the trademark. While the case
against Tovar comes to a close - which many hope will be very soon - the
slogan is still out there. Regardless of who claims heir to the
phrase, the bottom line is that it is bringing traffic to the casinos,
and the general public is identifying Las Vegas with the scantily clad
undertones of "If you won't tell, we won't tell" Too bad the LVCVA
couldn't have used that one - Oh yes...it probably already had a
Trademark.
